The Miller at Rainbow Falls

At the end of a narrow forest road stands an old stone mill beside one of the clearest rivers in the realm.

The locals call it Rainbow Falls Mill.

For more than two hundred years, the enormous wooden wheel has turned beneath the same waterfall, grinding grain for the surrounding farms and villages. No king commissioned it, no wizard enchanted it, and no legendary battle was ever fought here.

Yet almost everyone in the valley depends upon it.

The mill belongs to an old dwarven miller who inherited it from his father, who inherited it from his mother before him. Every morning before sunrise, he opens the wooden gates that guide the mountain water toward the wheel. Soon the machinery begins its familiar rhythm, sacks of flour appear beside the door, and the smell of freshly milled grain mixes with roses growing against the warm stone walls.

One summer morning, an orc traveler arrives carrying an enormous sack over his shoulder.

He has crossed three mountain passes searching for the famous mill because his village has suffered a poor harvest. He expects to negotiate for every sack of flour.

The miller listens to his story, takes a long look at the heavily loaded packhorse behind him and says:

"You carried an empty sack across three mountains? It would be terribly rude of me to let you carry it home empty."

By afternoon, the orc's bags are full.

The miller refuses payment for half of them.

Behind the old building, the waterfall crashes into brilliant turquoise pools, throwing mist into the sunlight until a small rainbow appears beside the wheel. Ducks drift beneath the ancient stone bridge, flowers grow between moss-covered rocks, and the river continues downstream toward people who may never know where their next loaf began.
