Some folkrace cars are remembered for their unusual appearance. Others become famous because they are fast. The legendary Volkswagen short-nose Variant earned its reputation for both — but above all, it became known as a winner.

Rare, unmistakable and fiercely competitive, the short-nose Variant carries much of the same unconventional racing spirit that made the classic Volkswagen Bubble a favourite in Swedish grassroots motorsport. But this particular machine hides something much more serious beneath its humble appearance: a Volvo B230 engine fed by twin Weber 45 carburettors.

That combination transforms the old Volkswagen into an incredibly potent folkrace machine. The powerful engine and twin carburettor setup give the Variant the strength and response needed to challenge its competitors across the loose gravel — while its characteristic rear-engined layout helps it put that performance to use when the race begins.

Six cars line up side by side. The engines rise. Drivers wait for the signal.

Then the Variant launches off.

With the Volvo engine roaring and the twin Weber 45s feeding it, the green Volkswagen explodes away from the starting line. Its ability to get away quickly has become one of its defining characteristics, giving the driver an opportunity to reach the first corner ahead of the chaos developing behind.

And once it gets to the front, the Variant has another reputation to uphold:

Winning races.

Its combination of an effective chassis, remarkable starting ability and potent Volvo power has made the short-nose Variant a formidable opponent. Competitors may see an unusual old Volkswagen beside them on the grid, but they know that when the start comes, underestimating the Variant can be a serious mistake.

This artwork captures that reputation perfectly. The bright green machine powers across the gravel while two competitors desperately chase from behind. Dirt flies from its wheels, the driver remains focused inside the roll cage, Swedish flags wave above the circuit and spectators watch another classic folkrace battle unfold.

Its rarity makes the story even more special. Seeing one of these Variants competing is already memorable. Seeing one equipped with a powerful Volvo engine and twin Weber carburettors, fighting at the front and doing what the Variant became famous for — winning — is something else entirely.

The Bubble may be the Volkswagen everyone recognizes.

But this Variant has the power, the starts and the victories to build a legend of its own.
