When fika becomes a matter of pride

It began as an innocent disagreement around the kitchen table.

Someone claimed that grandmother still made the finest cinnamon buns on the farm. Someone else disagreed. A third person suggested that the only fair way to settle the argument was with a competition.

That was the moment fika became serious.

Soon the kitchen was filled with flour, butter, cinnamon and determined bakers. Everyone had a different strategy. One insisted on an old family recipe. Another experimented with extra filling. The children believed that more pearl sugar automatically meant a better bun.

Grandmother said very little.

She simply smiled and continued baking.

But somewhere along the way, one competitor misunderstood the assignment completely.

Instead of making the best cinnamon bun, they decided to make the biggest.

When the enormous creation was finally carried into the garden, everyone fell silent. Sitting proudly in the middle of the table was a cinnamon bun so enormous that the ordinary buns surrounding it suddenly looked like crumbs.

The children immediately declared a winner.

The adults protested.

Grandmother inspected the giant bun with great seriousness before finally admitting that although it probably broke every rule of the competition, she was rather impressed.

And so the judges made their final decision.

There would be no winner.

They would simply have to eat everything.
