There are certain cars that simply belong on a Swedish folkrace track. Cars whose silhouettes have become inseparable from gravel, roaring engines, packed starting grids and summer weekends spent racing among the forests.

The Volkswagen 1600 is one of them.

Sharing many of the same characteristics as the legendary VW 1500 and short-nose Variant, the 1600 combines classic rear-engined Volkswagen engineering with a compact and wonderfully distinctive fastback body. Unlike some of its rarer relatives, however, the VW 1600 became a remarkably familiar sight in folkrace — similarly common as the beloved Bubble.

But this green number 113 is no ordinary Volkswagen.

Behind its classic silhouette lies a formidable Volvo B230 engine breathing through two Weber 45 carburettors. It is a combination that transforms the old Volkswagen into a remarkably potent racing machine, delivering the aggressive response and power needed to fight its way through a crowded folkrace field.

And just like the 1500, Variant and Bubble, the 1600 can be fearsome when the starting signal comes.

Six cars wait side by side. Engines roar on perfect rev limits. The drivers prepare for those critical first seconds.

Then the signal comes.

The VW launches off.

The rear wheels bite into the loose surface as the Volvo B230 comes alive and the twin Weber 45s roar. The lightweight Volkswagen charges toward the first corner, fighting for the precious advantage that can determine the entire race before the first lap has truly begun.

Once ahead, catching it is another matter entirely.

The VW 1600 has built a reputation as a fearsome opponent and proven winner, a machine that has fought its way to victory in many folkrace events. Its combination of Volkswagen character, strong starting performance and powerful Volvo engine makes it exactly the sort of car competitors never want to underestimate when they see it sitting beside them on the grid.

This artwork captures that fearless character beautifully. Number 113 attacks the gravel with the rear wheels throwing dirt into the air, its suspension working hard as the driver commits fully to the course. Behind the action, spectators gather beneath Swedish flags while the evening sun disappears across a magnificent lake, forests and little red countryside houses.

It is speed surrounded by serenity.

It is Swedish grassroots motorsport at golden hour.

It is the VW 1600 — and it came to win.
