The Volkswagen 1500S is one of those machines.

Closely related to the legendary short-nose Volkswagen Variant, the 1500S carries the same potent racing characteristics and engine setup, but packages them inside the unmistakable proportions of a classic sedan. Short, purposeful and wonderfully unconventional, it represents another side of the rear-engined Volkswagen family that became so memorable in Swedish folkrace.

And this particular 1500S is far removed from an ordinary road car.

At its heart sits the formidable and indestructible Volvo B23 engine with twin Weber 45 carburettors. The combination gives the lightweight Volkswagen tremendous response and makes it an incredibly potent opponent against the other cars on the starting grid.

When six competitors line up side by side, the little sedan should never be underestimated.

The signal comes. The Weber carburettors roar. The rear wheels bite into the starting pad and the 1500S launches toward the first corner, using the same remarkable starting characteristics that made the short-nose Variant and Beetle such exciting folkrace machines.

But getting away quickly is only the beginning.

Once the racing starts, the 1500S becomes a compact green fighter. It dives through the corners, throws gravel from beneath its wheels and uses every bit of its Volvo power to defend its position. Its humble sedan body almost disguises what lies beneath — until the driver puts the throttle down.
