The Wizard Who Could Talk to Chickens

For most of his life, Master Eldric had been known as one of the strangest wizards in the kingdom.

He could not summon dragons. He had never discovered the secret of immortality. His attempts at turning iron into gold had produced nothing except several unusually shiny spoons.

But Eldric possessed one magical ability that no other wizard could explain.

He could talk to chickens.

Not imitate them. Not magically command them. He could actually hold conversations with them.

Every morning, chickens from farms across the village gathered beneath the enormous old tree outside his cottage. They sat patiently on little benches while Eldric listened to everything they had to say.

And, as it turned out, chickens had a lot to say.

One complained that the farmer served breakfast three minutes late. Another demanded better nesting material. A particularly ambitious brown hen wanted to know why chickens were never appointed to the village council. The enormous white hen insisted that someone had been stealing her favorite sunflower seeds.

Eldric treated every complaint with complete seriousness.

Soon, villagers began gathering nearby to watch the bizarre meetings. They could only hear clucking from the chickens, followed by Eldric answering questions, taking notes and occasionally becoming involved in surprisingly heated debates.

Then something unexpected happened.

The wizard discovered that the chickens knew almost everything happening in the village.

They wandered through farms, gardens and marketplaces all day. They overheard conversations. They noticed missing objects. They knew which gate had been left open, where the baker's keys had disappeared and which child had secretly eaten the strawberries intended for the midsummer feast.

Before long, villagers began visiting Eldric whenever something mysterious happened.

And Eldric would always ask the same question:

“Have we consulted the chickens?”
